Dear Guest:

THANKS FOR ALL THE BOCCE

Thank you everyone who participated and supported our 2nd annual Bocce tournament at Mickey’s Top Sirloin. We had another great turnout and gave away even more raffle prizes. Congratulations to our first place winners the Stellae Alpine, Romana Antonelli, George Falagredi, Mario Heimebaugh, and fill in specialist Mike Dalio. Second place goes to the Italian Pride team, Warren and Lucia Wilke, Elena Gerardo, and Nick Mariani. Our youngest players in the tournament, Jake Regan (13) and Peter LoSasso (9), along with teammates Pam Wright and Addie Napier, were a surprise to many of the bocce veterans, as they advanced into the later rounds. Our thanks to the staff of Mickey’s for a great job, with special thanks to Stacy and to Mike. Thanks to all the people who donated so many raffle prizes. Thanks to Steel Images for the Artwork and Elizabeth Capritta for the wonderful baskets. Thank you to Fred Mauro for gift certificates from Clyde’s Sausage, Lechuga’s, Deli Italia, St. Kiilian’s Cheese Shop, Pagliacci’s Italian Restaurant, Patsy’s Inn Italian Restaurant, Gargaro’s Italian Bakery, and Pizza Alley. Thank you to Fred Marzano for a great job chairing this event again with lots of help from his sidekick, Gary Capritta. Thank you to Rose Mary Puma, Joann Zamboni and Annette Dubner, who did a great job taking care of merchandise, raffle tickets, candy, etc. Thank you to historian Mike Dalio for all the great photos. Thanks to Maria our raffle specialist and to Frank Allen, Tom Brienza, and Anna Vann for their help.

TRADITION

The tradition of celebrating Columbus Day goes back a long way. Most people know that Colorado was the first state to celebrate Columbus Day in 1907 and held the first parade in Pueblo in 1909. It is important in 2010 to remember what it meant to be Italian American in 1907 or 1938, or 1949. The great pride Italian Americans felt in having a holiday of their own; a national symbol and celebration of acceptance for these strong people. Everyone has a story from childhood or from their parents or grandparents about celebrating Columbus Day and the parade in their city or neighborhood. These memories and this tradition, was proudly passed on to us. The following letter, on loan from the Rizzi family and reproduced verbatim, provides a glimpse into history and the importance of Columbus Day across the country.

Mr. Gaetano Rizzi,
c/o Italian Lodge,
Superior, Wyo.
Cheyenne, Wyoming
March 7, 1938

My Dear Associate:

Having been rewarded with success in re our combined efforts, namely, Chapter 6, Wyoming Session Law, 1937, Sections 1 and 2, approved February 4th, 1937, setting forth October 12th as Columbus Day-

Now may we hope that each and every “Patriotic” Italian and all citizens of our State will go forward as follows:

  1. Let each City, wherein there exists a Lodge, and/or Colony, wherein its members or residents authorize their President, or one who will consent to act as Chairman, and in and for their district, to cooperate in the fostering and promoting the construction and erection of a monument on the State Capitol grounds in honor of Columbus.
  2. District Chairman to agree upon the place and time where all may assemble, and set up a permanent organization to carry out the objects and purposes.

Will appreciate acknowledgement and suggestions,

Very truly yours,

C.A.V. Paul Milatzo,
Deputy Italian Counsel,
3039 Snyder Avenue,
Cheyenne, Wyoming.

The current edition of Italian America (summer 2010) takes this glimpse into history one step further with pictures and articles about Denver and Pueblo, the history surrounding their Italian communities and the importance of Columbus Day to their lives.
